6 Tips for Beginner Hikers


  • Tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back.

Takes a quick moment & it’s nice to know someone has your back in case you’re not back.

  • Make sure everyone in your hiking group knows the plan. 

Make sure everyone knows the route. Prepare the group, by letting them know where you are all intending to go, how long the distance will be, so they can be mentally prepared for the hike.

  • Check the weather.

Know that the weather can change very quickly. Prepare for the weather change. Bring a poncho, extra layers of clothing, an umbrella, etc.

  • Be aware of local wildlife in the area where you are hiking.

Make sure you have some bear spray or whistle repellent. In Iowa you can encounter wildcats, foxes, poison ivy.

  • Carry some essential

First aid kit, headlamp, emergency thermal blankets, pocketknife, a way to start a fire, extra cloths, extra food & water, a way to get extra food and water if you run out.

  • Look up.

New hikers tend to look down. Make sure to be mindful, take a look up, beath the fresh air, and notice your senses and have fun while experiencing nature. Plus, you don’t want to miss seeing the low hanging branch that might hit you on the head.
